About Australian Federal Police

As Australia’s national policing agency, the AFP is a key member of the Australian law enforcement and national security
community, leading efforts to keep Australians and Australian interests safe both at home and overseas. The AFP also has
responsibility for providing community policing services to the Australian Capital Territory and Australia’s territories, including
Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Norfolk Island and Jervis Bay

Duties

  • Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of
  • Systems Administrators (Band 6) to fill roles within Digital Surveillance Collection (DSC) and
  • Specialist Capability Systems (SCS) teams.
  • DSC develops and operates a wide range of lawful covert surveillance capabilities in support of
  • the AFP’s operational requirements, including telecommunications interception, surveillance
  • devices, collection under computer access warrant, and collection from open sources. For further

  • SCS is responsible for delivering, integrating, and sustaining specialised systems that underpin
  • the AFP’s technical and operational capabilities. It enables frontline and covert operations through
  • secure, user-centred, and advanced technology solutions, with a strong focus on innovation,
  • efficiency, and sovereign capability advantage.
  • You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the
  • regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is
  • expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any
  • requirements of the position as outlined below.
  • What will you do?
  • Providing systems support for AFP covert surveillance capabilities, which may include
  • support outside of core business hours through an on-call rotation.
  • Diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues across systems and environments
  • Applying structured troubleshooting approaches to minimise disruption to operational
  • capability
  • Configuring and maintaining servers and networks that support AFP operations
  • Researching and develop and implement new systems and processes.
  • Maintaining currency in information technology processes and technical knowledge through
  • ongoing professional development.
  • Developing an understanding of AFP operational requirements and translating them into
  • technical solutions
  • Working closely with multidisciplinary teams (developers, analysts, engineers) to deliver
  • outcomes

Eligibility / Notes

  • Essential Requirements
  • You must be an Australian citizen and be able to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting
  • Level 1 (NV1) security clearance. Successful applications will be sponsored by the AFP.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, deploying, administering and supporting Linux and
  • Windows-based operating systems, applications and enterprise infrastructure.
  • Experience administering core infrastructure services, including Active Directory, DNS,
  • DHCP, Group Policy and identity and access management solutions.
  • Experience managing virtualised environments and cloud technologies, including VMware,
  • Hyper-V, Azure and/or AWS.
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate, troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues within
  • enterprise environments.
  • Experience using collaboration and development tools, including GitLab, GitHub, Azure
  • DevOps, Jira, Confluence or similar platforms.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with
  • technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working within IT Service Management (ITSM) frameworks, including incident,
  • problem, change and release management processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
  • to deliver operational and project outcomes.
  • Commitment to maintaining system security, availability and performance in accordance with
  • organisational policies and government standards.
  • Desirable Requirements
  • While not essential, applications will be highly regarded where candidates can demonstrate
  • experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Containerisation technologies (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).
  • Infrastructure as Code and automation tooling (e.g. Ansible, Terraform, PowerShell).
  • Web server administration (e.g. NGINX, Apache, IIS).
  • Monitoring and observability platforms (e.g. CheckMK, Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk,
  • SNMP).
  • Enterprise networking concepts, including switching, routing, firewalls, VPNs, load balancing
  • and proxy services.
  • Microsoft 365 administration, including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint and Intune.
  • Cyber security practices and frameworks, including the Australian Government Information
  • Security Manual (ISM), Essential Eight and Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).
  • Backup, disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
  • Vulnerability management, patch management and security hardening activities.
  • Agile delivery methodologies and practices (e.g. Scrum, Kanban, DevSecOps).
  • Scripting and automation using PowerShell, Bash or Python.
  • Experience supporting highly secure or classified government environments.
  • Note: Candidates are not expected to have experience across all of the above areas. However,
  • demonstrated experience in one or more of these technologies and disciplines will be highly
  • regarded.
