About Department of Defence

The GENESYS Business Unit (GBU) is a specialised software development and sustainment team
within Defence, responsible for the ongoing enhancement and support of systems built on the
GENESYS framework. The platform supports a wide range of critical Defence functions, including
risk management, capability development, synchronisation, prioritisation, costing and movement
management.
GBU plays a key role in ensuring the system remains robust, scalable and responsive to evolving
operational requirements, while continuously delivering innovative solutions aligned with Defence
objectives.
Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal APS 6 ICT Systems Administrator demonstrates strong technical expertise in systems
administration, combined with sound judgement, initiative and problem-solving skills in complex
environments. They have proven experience managing ICT systems, implementing solutions and
maintaining service continuity, supported by an understanding of government policy, legislative
frameworks and Defence business processes.
The role requires well-developed leadership capability, including experience coaching staff, setting
priorities and managing workflows to achieve outcomes. Strong communication and stakeholder
engagement skills are essential, with the ability to tailor messaging and build effective working
relationships. A collaborative mindset, adaptability and commitment to continuous learning are
critical to success.
Key skills and experience include recent hands-on systems administration experience, team
management capability, Microsoft certifications (Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate
and Modern Desktop Administrator), SQL Server knowledge, SaaS experience, and relevant
certifications such as CompTIA Security+ and ITIL Foundation.

Duties

  • The Role
  • An APS 6 ICT Systems Administrator in Defence delivers complex systems administration
  • services with considerable autonomy, ensuring hardware and software are installed, maintained
  • and optimised in line with policies and operational requirements.
  • The role requires applying technical expertise, initiative and judgement to resolve issues, manage
  • change and maintain continuity of ICT services, while contributing to projects, strategic planning
  • and continuous improvement.
  • The position also involves:
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and leadership, including coaching team members, setting
  • priorities and managing workflows.
  • Effective communication, collaboration and adaptability are essential to deliver solutions and
  • meet Defence outcomes in dynamic environments.
  • Advanced ICT systems administration and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership, teamwork and stakeholder engagement capability.
  • Ability to apply policy, manage change and deliver complex solutions independently.
