About the Office The purpose of the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman (the Office) is to: • provide assurance that the
Australia Government entities and prescribed private sector organisations that the Office oversights, act with integrity and treat
people fairly, and • influence enduring systematic improvement in public administration in Australia and the Pacific region. The
Office does this through handling complaints, conducting investigations, performing audits and inspections and encouraging good
administration. The Office also influences improvement in public administration in the Pacific region through collaboration with
partner entities. The Office is statutorily independent within the Attorney-General’s portfolio with the following separate titles that
describe some of our specific powers and functions: • Defence Force Ombudsman • Postal Industry Ombudsman • Overseas

Students Ombudsman • Private Health Insurance Ombudsman • Immigration Ombudsman • Law Enforcement Ombudsman • VET
Students Loans Ombudsman. The Commonwealth Ombudsman is also the ACT Ombudsman. Further information about the Office

Duties

  • The duties of the role include but are not limited to:
  • Lead the operational delivery of the Office Performance Framework, including producing
  • regular reports, monitoring organisational performance and enabling business areas to track,
  • analyse and improve outcomes.
  • Lead the enterprise governance of data across the Office, including setting direction, driving
  • accountability, and embedding consistent data governance practices across business areas.
  • Build organisational capability in data governance, performance measurement and data
  • literacy, supporting sustained uplift across the Office.
  • Drive branch engagement and accountability in performance planning, ensuring alignment
  • with organisational priorities and consistent application of performance standards.
  • Lead the design, implementation and ongoing maturity of the Data Governance Framework,
  • including policies, standards, controls and assurance mechanisms.
  • Provide timely, clear and actionable performance insights to the Office, branches and staff
  • outside formal reporting cycles, supporting informed decision making.
  • Foster strong collaboration across the Office to ensure integrated, consistent and high
  • quality performance and data reporting.
  • Manage strategic relationships and contracts with external providers, including oversight of
  • survey services to ensure quality and value for money.
  • Contribute as a leader in the team and branch by modelling collaborative behaviours,
  • building capability, and identifying opportunities to improve outcomes across the Office.
  • This process may also be used to establish a merit pool for future Assistant Director vacancies
  • across the Office arising from the date of advertisement.

Eligibility / Notes

  • The successful candidate must:
  • be an Australian citizen,
  • undergo a National Criminal History records check and
  • be able to obtain and maintain a baseline security clearance.
