About Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet

The Nomination Panel for Appointments to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and
Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) boards oversees merit-based selection processes to fill
vacancies on the boards of the ABC and SBS and recommends candidates for appointment by the
Government. The Nomination Panel is independent and not subject to direction by the
Government.
The Nomination Panel was established in 2008 under the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act
1983 (the ABC Act) and is referenced in the Special Broadcasting Services Act 1991 (the SBS
Act).
The Nomination Panel consists of a Chair and at least two, but no more than three, members and
has a quorum of three. Members of the Nomination Panel are appointed on a part-time basis for a
period of three years. The Nomination Panel is supported by a secretariat in the Department of
Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts
(DITRDCSA).

Duties

  • As vacancies on the boards of the ABC and the SBS arise, the Minister for Communications asks
  • the Nomination Panel to conduct a merit-based selection process to identify potential appointees
  • in accordance with the ABC and SBS Acts. The Nomination Panel assesses all applicants on merit
  • against the relevant selection criteria. The Nomination Panel prepares a written report to the
  • Minister (and the Prime Minister, if the appointment is for the Chairperson of the ABC) on the
  • outcome of the selection process, with a comparative assessment of at least three candidates
  • nominated for the appointment.

  • Meetings of the Nomination Panel are held in Sydney or virtually.

  • public sector experience

  • encouraged. Flexible working arrangements will be considered.
