About Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Regulator
The Office of Legal Counsel is led by the General Counsel, who is the chief-in-house legal advisor.
The General Counsel is supported by a Deputy General-Counsel and a small team of senior
lawyers. The successful candidate will join a team, delivering high-quality services across multiple
disciplines, including nuclear law, public law, corporate and commercial law, employment law, and
litigation. In this role, you will provide strategic, high-level legal advice on major, complex and
sensitive matters impacting the operation of the ANNPSR.

As an EL1 Senior Legal Officer, you will be required to demonstrate a range of skills, however the

Duties
- The Role
- We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Legal Officer (SLO) to join our in-house legal team.
- The SLO will work closely with senior officials across ANNPSR to influence critical regulatory
- frameworks, policy and operational outcomes.
- The SLO will be required to have knowledge, skills and professional expertise as a legal
- practitioner as well as experience in the application of law in a regulatory and government agency
- setting.
- Working across legal disciplines, the SLO will drive compliance with regulatory and legal
- frameworks and manage high-impact legal matters.
- In providing legal advice, the SLO will exercise a considerable degree of independence, perform a
- subject matter expert role, and exercise sound decision-making and judgement.
- The successful candidate will deliver high-quality services across disciplines, including nuclear
- law, public law, corporate and commercial law, employment law, and litigation.
- From time to time, the successful candidate will be required to manage junior staff so they must
- demonstrate a strong leadership focus.
- This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in the Australian Naval Nuclear
- Power Safety Regulator (ANNPSR) as a Building Capability Payment (BCP). This enables
- ANNPSR to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the
- Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Regulatory Determination 2025 (Terms and Conditions of
- Employment), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to ANNPSR

Eligibility / Notes
- Security Clearance:
- Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Negative Vetting Level 2”.
- Mandatory Qualifications:
- Hold a relevant degree in law (or equivalent qualification).
- Hold a graduate diploma in legal practice (or equivalent).
- Be admitted as a lawyer, legal practitioner, or barrister and/or solicitor of the High Court or
- Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory.
- Be eligible and willing to hold and maintain a practising certificate in the relevant jurisdiction.
