About Office of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and
The Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security is an independent statutory office holder who reviews the activities of six
intelligence agencies within IGIS jurisdiction: • Australian Security Intelligence Organisation – ASIO • Australian Secret Intelligence
Service – ASIS • Australian Signals Directorate – ASD • Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation – AGO • Defence
Intelligence Organisation – DIO • Office of National Intelligence – ONI The purpose of this review is to ensure that these agencies
act legally and with propriety, comply with ministerial guidelines and directives and respect human rights. The functions of the
Inspector-General are prescribed under sections 8, 9 and 9A of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security Act 1986
(Comlaw). The Inspector-General can undertake a formal inquiry into the activities of an agency in response to a complaint or a
reference from a minister. The Inspector-General can also act independently to initiate inquiries and conducts regular inspections
and monitoring of agency activities. In conducting an inquiry, the Inspector-General has significant powers which include requiring
the attendance of witnesses, taking sworn evidence, copying and retention of documents and entry into the premises of an agency
within jurisdiction. The Inspector-General can also conduct preliminary inquiries into matters in order to decide whether to initiate a
full inquiry.
Duties
- The Opportunity
- The IGIS Executive Officer provides high-level executive, strategic, and operational support to the
- Inspector-General and Deputy Inspector-General. The role is critical in enabling the effective
- functioning of the IGIS Office by managing competing priorities, providing advice, and facilitating
- coordination across the National Intelligence Community (NIC) and broader government
- stakeholders. The IGIS EO will act as the critical conduit between the IG and Deputy IG, Office
- staff, and external stakeholders, providing confidential advice and coordinating key projects to
- support Oversight objectives.
- Reporting directly to the IGIS and Deputy IGIS, this role operates with a high degree of autonomy
- and requires strong judgement, initiative, and the ability to deliver in a complex and sensitive
- environment. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to gain broad exposure to the National
- Intelligence Community, developing a deep understanding of the roles and responsibilities of
- various agencies within a broad oversight landscape.

- Key responsibilities of the Executive Officer include:
- Executive Support & Coordination
- Manage complex and dynamic diaries for the IGIS and Deputy IGIS, including scheduling
- across multiple stakeholders, prioritising competing demands, and anticipating requirements.
- Coordinate briefings, meetings, and official engagements, ensuring the IGIS and Deputy
- IGIS are well-prepared with timely, high-quality materials.
- Act as a central point of contact between the IGIS Office, Attorney-General’s Department
- and Ministers’ offices, and senior officials across the National Intelligence Community.
- Prepare correspondence, submissions, and meeting materials with a high level of accuracy,
- discretion, and professionalism.
- Book travel and organise office wide events.
- Strategic Advice & Support
- Provide advice to the IGIS and Deputy IGIS on priorities, stakeholder engagement, and
- emerging issues.
- Undertake research and analysis on complex issues, synthesising information into clear
- insights to inform decision-making.
- Prepare and draft speeches, talking points and formal addresses, ensuring content is
- accurate and aligned with organisational priorities and the expectations of diverse
- audiences.
- Identify risks, issues, and opportunities, and proactively recommend solutions or mitigation
- strategies.
- Ensure alignment of daily activities with organisational priorities and longer-term strategic
- objective.
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Liaise effectively with executive offices across the National Intelligence Community, including
- intelligence agencies, central agencies, and portfolio departments.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
- to support collaboration and information flow.
- To be successful in this role you will have:
- Demonstrated experience providing high-level executive and policy support in a complex,
- sensitive, or national security environment.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, exercise sound
- judgement, and meet tight deadlines in a high-tempo setting.
- Proven ability to provide strategic advice, anticipate executive needs, and align support with
- broader organisational priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare high-quality
- briefings and correspondence.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with experience liaising with senior officials across
- government and, ideally, previous exposure to the National Intelligence Community.
- Understanding of, or the ability to quickly develop an understanding of, the National
- Intelligence Community and its oversight environment.
- High level of discretion, integrity, and professionalism, with the ability to handle sensitive and
- classified information appropriately.
- Essential skills
- the ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret Positive Vetting clearance
- Desirable skills
- understanding of, or experience in, the National Intelligence Community and/or the APS

Eligibility / Notes
- Security, suitability and integrity requirements
- Citizenship – you must be an Australian citizen
- Employment Suitability Assessment (ESA) – appointment to our Office depends on the
- outcome of an ESA.
- Security Clearance – appointment and ongoing employment at the Office are subject to a
- Positive Vetting/Privileged Access clearance being granted and maintained. You must be
- willing to undergo a security clearance vetting process at the Top-Secret Positive
- Vetting/Privileged Access clearance level and must be willing to fully cooperate in the
- assessment process, including the timely provision of information and documentary
- evidence. Security vetting may take many months to complete and requires candidates to
- provide significant personal information to the vetting authority.
- Positions at IGIS are positions of trust. In addition to the above, all IGIS staff are required to make
- annual conflict of interest declarations to support the independence and integrity of the Office.
- The successful candidate must be located in Canberra or willing to relocate. The IGIS offers
- relocation assistance to new employees relocating to Canberra from interstate.
