About Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Ngurra: The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Precinct (Ngurra) is a nationally
significant initiative which aims to create a world-class cultural precinct to preserve, recognise and
celebrate the rich heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Ngurra is to be located on the Acton Peninsula, in the heart of the Australian Capital Territory –
creating a central place of First Nations history, culture and heritage in our national story. Ngurra
will play a key role in speaking to the central place that First Nations peoples hold in Australia’s
story. Ngurra comprises of two key and distinct elements:
The National Indigenous Knowledge and Cultural Centre (NIKCC) with new and expanded
facilities for the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS)
that empower and support First Nations peoples to tell their own stories and celebrate the
65,000-year history of this nation.
The National Resting Place (NRP) to house and care for repatriated limited provenance
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ancestral Remains, and any associated cultural
material, on their journey back to Country.
The Ngurra Transformation Group (NTG) brings together the Ngurra Project, Property and
Security, Strategic Partnerships and Commercialisation, Ethics and Research Governance, and
Digital Services.
The Group plays a central role in preparing AIATSIS for its future on Acton Peninsula, ensuring
the organisation’s physical, digital, operational and strategic capabilities are aligned with the
delivery of Ngurra. As both a major capital works project and a catalyst for organisation-wide
transformation, Ngurra is supported through an integrated approach that combines infrastructure
delivery, property management, technology, research governance, partnerships and commercial
development.
