About Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety
The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) is the Australian Government’s primary authority on
radiation protection and nuclear safety. Our purpose is to protect the Australian people and the environment from the harmful
effects of radiation, through understanding risks, best practice regulation, research, policy, services, partnerships and engaging
with the community.
Duties
- In this role, you will work under limited supervision and perform a range of moderately complex
- tasks associated with operating and maintaining Australia’s radiation monitoring networks. These
- include radionuclide air monitoring and noble gas stations that form part of the Comprehensive
- Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) International Monitoring System (IMS), the Ultraviolet (UV)
- radiation network, and the Environmental Radiation Monitoring System (ERMS). You will work
- closely with the technical lead providing maintenance and development support for hardware and
- software associated with the radionuclide monitoring systems.
- You will be working as part of a small team, delivering high quality and timely data to the CTBT
- International Data Centre (IDC) and other stakeholders. In this role, you will be responsible for
- preparing reports as well as establishing and maintaining a high degree of documentation
- management and record keeping.
- Key accountabilities
- Under limited supervision and using established principles, practices and procedures,
- undertake a range of moderately complex tasks associated with the ongoing development of
- Australia’s CTBT air monitoring and noble gas stations, UV network and ERMS network;
- Assist in the maintenance and upgrading of station equipment, relating to the operation of
- ARPANSA’s networks, including field work;
- Maintain, in conjunction with the digital services section, software relating to ARPANSA’s
- networks;
- Liaise with operational and technical staff from organisations contracted to assist with the
- running of ARPANSA’s radiation monitoring networks;
- Develop technical procedural documents.
Eligibility / Notes
- To be considered for this position, you will have experience operating and maintaining large
- complex data acquisition systems. You will possess both a strong technical competency as well as
- an astute attention to detail to ensure the network meets its strict performance objectives.
- You will have technical knowledge and experience operating and maintaining monitoring
- equipment and other associated data acquisition systems.
- You will also have experience working as part of a team, including with representatives from other
- organisations, both national and international, to achieve a common goal.

- Expertise and experience working within the specialist area of High-Resolution Gamma detector
- systems, a proficiency in diagnosing detector faults and repairing these will be highly
- regarded. Experience maintaining and developing software for use in supporting a large
- multi-layered network would be an advantage.
- You must hold Australian citizenship and be prepared to travel interstate from time to time as
- required. ARPANSA requires all new employees to obtain and maintain a national security
- clearance as a condition of engagement. You must also meet required pre-employment checks as
- necessary.

- systems.
- Experience maintaining and developing software including the ability to troubleshoot and
- resolve technical issues, and ensure software systems remain reliable, secure and fit for
- purpose.
- Proven ability to work within a small team and to liaise effectively with a range of
- representatives from external organisations, domestically and internationally.
- Demonstrated experience maintaining a high standard of technical documentation to support
- with operational requirements and future knowledge transfer.
