About Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) is the Australian Government’s primary authority on
radiation protection and nuclear safety. Our purpose is to protect the Australian people and the environment from the harmful
effects of radiation, through understanding risks, best practice regulation, research, policy, services, partnerships and engaging
with the community.

Duties

  • ARPANSA provides dedicated Technical and Scientific Services (TSS) to deliver independent
  • regulatory, technical and scientific support to the Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Regulator
  • (ANNPSR) and ARPANSA’s Regulatory Service Branch (RSB). This service is provided under a
  • Service Level Agreement (SLA) with specific performance indicators. Robust governance systems
  • are essential to ensure resilient and effective service delivery.
  • In this role you will coordinate and lead administrative and governance support across the SLA
  • lifecycle, assist with process implementation, track task progress, and manage projects and
  • periodic reporting. The role will also coordinate across ARPANSA to marshal expertise to support
  • discrete packages of work under the TSS framework.
  • Key accountabilities
  • Lead and coordinate administrative, governance and coordination support to the ARPANSA
  • TSS, with a focus on project management and periodic reporting.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and updating of systems, guidelines, policies and
  • procedures relevant to the function of the section, identifying opportunities to strengthen
  • process, improve efficiency, and support organisational capability
  • Provide authoritative governance advice and strategic support to the Principal Advisor and
  • Scientific Director of the TSS on issues relating to ARPANSA’s engagement with ANNPSR
  • and the nuclear-powered submarine enterprise more broadly.
  • Build, maintain and influence effective relationships with key internal and external
  • stakeholders working collaboratively to design, implement, and embed robust governance
  • systems to ensure resilient and effective service delivery.
  • Coordinate ANNPSR and ARPANSA engagement through task management, secretariat
  • support and managing visits.
  • Ensure the provision of timely and high-quality technical and scientific products and briefing
  • material exercising quality assurance oversight to maintain accuracy, consistency, and
  • alignment with legislative, policy and organisational standards

Eligibility / Notes

  • To be considered for this position, you will possess tertiary qualifications or comparable overseas
  • qualifications and/or substantial related experience, which are appropriate to the role and duties of
  • the position. Knowledge and experience in project management, radiation protection, nuclear
  • safety and/or regulation will be looked on favourably.
  • You will have well developed interpersonal skills and the ability to contribute effectively in a team
  • environment, sometimes in a leading role, together with the ability to liaise with all levels of staff,
  • clients and members of the general public. You will have the ability to consistently perform

  • You must hold Australian citizenship and be prepared to travel interstate from time to time as
  • required. ARPANSA requires all new employees to obtain and maintain a national security
  • clearance as a condition of engagement. You must also meet required pre-employment checks as
  • necessary.
  • Selection criteria
  • The selection criteria for this role are:
  • Demonstrated understanding of frameworks for governance and project management,
  • including the ability to develop, implement and maintain systems, guidelines, policies and
  • procedures to support organisational capacity.
  • Experience leading or significantly contributing to the delivery of scientific and/or regulatory
  • projects, including monitoring progress, periodic reporting and identifying risks in a rapidly
  • evolving work environment to achieve team objectives.
  • Highly developed communication skills, with the ability to synthesise complex scientific
  • information and tailor products to a range of audiences, including senior executives and
  • stakeholders.
  • Possess an ability to work independently to effectively prioritise and manage competing
  • priorities under pressure, and sound judgement and initiative necessary to meet deadlines
  • and achieve results aligned with agency objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish, maintain and influence working relationships with a range
  • of diverse stakeholders, both internal and external, to facilitate section and agency
  • objectives.
