About Australian Federal Police

As Australia’s national policing agency, the AFP is a key member of the Australian law enforcement and national security
community, leading efforts to keep Australians and Australian interests safe both at home and overseas. The AFP also has
responsibility for providing community policing services to the Australian Capital Territory and Australia’s territories, including
Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Norfolk Island and Jervis Bay

Duties

  • What is the role?
  • The broader Legislation and Governance section leads the ACT Policing (ACTP) law reform and
  • policy agenda and supports the Executive on law enforcement forums, budget policy, performance
  • analysis and statistical reporting and governance. The section is comprised of 5 teams:
  • Governance and Compliance
  • National Forums
  • Budget Policy
  • Legislation and Policy
  • Performance Statistics
  • Team members in this portfolio are responsible for leading bodies of work through to finalisation
  • under the guidance and supervision of the Team Leader and Senior Team Member.
  • ACTP National Forums is responsible for leading the coordination, consultation and development
  • of briefing material and advice to support the Chief Police Officer’s (CPO) attendance at a variety
  • of forums. National forums are an opportunity for the ACTP Executive to engage closely with
  • partners across the states and territories and the Commonwealth to discuss key domestic law
  • enforcement policy matters.
  • ACTP National Forums works with areas across ACTP to identify and advocate for ACTP’s
  • position on a range of policing matters ranging from counter-terrorism, transnational serious and
  • organised crime, countering violent extremism to family violence, firearms, hate crimes etc. ACTP
  • National Forums also support policing related meetings and forums at the Ministerial level,
  • including the Police Ministers Council.
  • As a Policy Officer within the team you will be instrumental in drafting and delivering advice to the
  • ACTP Executive, Territory and Commonwealth Government Ministers and other Government
  • members on matters of policy and high level strategic issues relating to law enforcement.
  • As a Team Member in the AFP you will be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes
  • in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance
  • Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and
  • meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.
  • What will you do?
  • Facilitate the Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency (ANZPAA) Cross
  • Jurisdictional Information Process, providing ACTP advice to states and territory
  • counterparts and maintaining strong relationships with these jurisdictions.
  • Coordinate and manage requests for ACT Policing input to support other jurisdictions or
  • ACTP Executive participation in national forums. This will include undertaking research and
  • liaising with areas across ACT Policing for input on a range of law enforcement matters.
  • Draft and produce high quality written advice including briefs to the ACTP Executive.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal/external stakeholders,
  • including across jurisdictions, and promote information sharing.
  • Represent ACT Policing at officer-level internal/external forums as an ACTP Liaison Officer.

  • Essential Requirements
  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
  • A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one

  • successful in the role:
  • Have contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to the role including ability to
  • communicate effectively especially in a written format and ability to develop productive
  • working relationships.
