Duties
- Your duties and responsibilities will be aligned to the relevant APS Work Level Standards.
- Assistant Director, Nuclear Security – (EL1):
- Your key duties may include some of the below:
- Lead the delivery of complex regulatory processes and products ensuring outcomes are timely,
- defensible and aligned with legislative and international obligations.
- Plan and coordinate nuclear security inspections and compliance activities, including cyber
- security and physical protection, exercising sound judgement in the assessment of risk,
- non-compliance and regulatory responses.
- Develop and maintain productive working relationships with whole-of-government and
- international and members of the international nuclear security community, to support shared
- objectives and coordinated outcomes.
- Represent ASNO in domestic and international technical forums, contributing specialist expertise
- and managing sensitive issues to support Australia’s interests.
- Undertake training and accreditation to be designated as an inspector
- Support the development, review and maintenance of operational guidance and compliance
- documentation, including standard operating procedures, regulatory plans and assessment
- frameworks, to ensure consistency, quality and regulatory integrity.
- Provide high-quality technical and regulatory advice to regulated entities and stakeholders
- through guidance material, outreach and training, supporting understanding of obligations and
- good practice.
- Prepare and deliver written products, including technical briefs, inspection reports,
- correspondence and briefing material clearly explaining complex or sensitive information to
- support senior decision-makers and stakeholders.
- Provide specialist advice to Directors and SES, drawing on technical analysis, risk assessment
- and stakeholder considerations to inform decision-making.
- Analyse complex technical, threat and risk information to support regulatory, operational and
- policy work in nuclear security.
- Director – EL2:
- Your key duties may include some of the below:
- Provide authoritative, strategically focused advice to the Director General ASNO and SES on
- nuclear safeguards implementation, policy, treaty interpretation and associated risks, including the
- operational impacts of AUKUS-related arrangements.
- Support strategic decision-making by applying sound judgement to interpret safeguards
- requirements, IAEA guidance and international practices, and translating these into practical and
- defensible regulatory advice.
- Lead the development and delivery of technical briefings, presenting complex information in a
- clear and accessible way for senior decision-makers and key stakeholders.
- Provide strategic leadership for ASNO’s across nuclear security capabilities, including setting
- priorities, establishing governance arrangements and driving continuous improvement.
- Be accountable for the effective delivery of complex regulatory functions, ensuring regulatory
- decisions are robust, proportionate and aligned with Australia’s legal and international obligations.
- Represent ASNO and Australia at domestic and international forums, exercising high-level
- judgement to manage sensitive, high-risk and strategically significant issues.
- Hold accountability for regulatory frameworks, policies and guidance, including approving and
- assuring the quality of standard operating procedures, regulatory plans and compliance
- methodologies.
- Ensure the provision of authoritative technical and regulatory advice to the regulated community,
- government partners and international counterparts, including through outreach, guidance and
- capability-building activities.
- Provide authoritative advice to the SES and Director General, integrating technical expertise,
- strategic risk assessment, stakeholder considerations and broader government priorities.
- Apply advanced nuclear security, cyber security and national security expertise to inform
- regulatory decisions, policy development and whole-of-government advice on complex and
- emerging issues.
- Lead capability development and workforce sustainability, fostering specialist expertise,
- mentoring technical leaders, and promoting knowledge sharing and awareness of international
- best practice, emerging technologies and threats.
