About Department of the Senate

The Department of the Senate provides the secretariat to the Senate – enabling its legislative and accountability activities – and to
dozens of parliamentary committees, whose work encompasses the Senate’s scrutiny functions and its exercise of Parliament’s
broad inquiry powers. In doing so, departmental officers provide the Senate, its committees, the President and other senators
expert, impartial advice about Senate and committee operations. We publish the Senate’s records, and produce an array of
information resources so that people may understand and engage in its work. With our colleagues across the Parliamentary
Service we also provide specialised advice and logistical support to senators so they may undertake their duties.

Duties

  • Provide administrative support to the Clerk Assistant (Procedure), including preparing
  • correspondence, arranging meetings, record keeping, research and organisational tasks.
  • Maintain and update templates and electronic files relating to private senators’ bills and
  • legislative amendments; draft routine procedural documents including scripts, amendments
  • and motions and associated email correspondence and provide support to the legislative
  • drafting team.
  • Prepare and update material for publication on the internet and intranet.
  • Liaise with senators, their staff, senior officers of the department and executive departments,
  • and undertake follow-up action as necessary.
  • Provide other administrative support to the Procedure Office as required.
  • Monitor chamber proceedings and respond to enquiries to the office.

Eligibility / Notes

  • Desirable:
  • Sound administrative and organisational experience.
  • An understanding of the Parliament including the Senate or the ability to acquire such
  • understanding.
