Duties
- Your duties and responsibilities will be aligned to the relevant APS Work Level Standards.
- Safeguards Officer – APS 5:
- APS 5 Safeguards Officers contribute to Australia’s safeguards system by supporting defined work
- activities under guidance. Duties may include:
- Prepare technical briefing material and written products (such as briefs, talking points or
- correspondence) relating to safeguards policy, inspections, regulatory non-compliance or
- international engagement.
- Support the development and administration of nuclear permits under Australian safeguards
- legislation, including compiling information and assisting with assessments.
- Assist with regulatory compliance activities, including supporting investigations into potential
- non-compliance or incidents and preparing records or preliminary analysis.
- Undertake domestic inspections and international verification activities, including facilitating IAEA
- inspections and assisting inspectors during field or desk-based activities.
- Support the implementation of safeguards arrangements for the Nuclear-Powered Submarine
- (NPS) Program, including coordinating inputs and preparing background material for safeguards
- arrangements negotiations with the IAEA and trilateral discussions with AUKUS partners.
- Undertake research and technical analysis to inform regulatory, policy or operational safeguards
- work.
- Support stakeholder engagement and outreach, including maintaining records, assisting with
- meetings and contributing to whole-of-government coordination.
- Support safeguards R&D and grant administration activities, including managing records,
- procurement processes, financial reporting and contract administration under supervision.
- Safeguards Senior Officer – APS 6:
- Your key duties may include:
- Develop and coordinate technical advice, briefings and negotiation resources on safeguards
- measures, treaty implementation and verification arrangements.
- Undertake regulatory assessments and actions in response to non-compliance, including
- managing investigations into incidents, breaches or violations under ASNO legislation.
- As part of a team, or leader of a team, plan and conduct domestic inspections and facilitate IAEA
- inspections, providing technical input, coordinating stakeholders and preparing inspection
- outcomes.
- Apply safeguards expertise and technical analysis to inform regulatory decisions, policy
- development and whole-of-government advice.
- Engage with international partners and intergovernmental organisations (including the IAEA, US
- and UK counterparts) to support safeguards cooperation and implementation.
- Coordinate development and negotiation of safeguards arrangements for the NPS Program,
- including managing logistics, stakeholder relationships and supporting Australia’s safeguards
- arrangements negotiations with the IAEA and trilateral discussions with AUKUS partners.
- Contribute to capability building and knowledge sharing, maintaining awareness of international
- safeguards technologies, verification methods and emerging practice
