Duties (What You Will Do)

Conduct legal research and prepare high‑level legal and related policy advice on matters including human rights, privacy and federal discrimination law.
Prepare and conduct external litigation, including Commission interventions and responses to applications under the Administrative Decisions (Judicial Review) Act 1977 (Cth).
Assist in inquiries into alleged breaches of human rights and discrimination in employment, including reporting to the Attorney‑General.
Provide advice on commercial arrangements, settling contracts and partnership agreements, and tender processes.
Assist with applications under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Cth) and related decisions.
Represent the Commission at meetings, seminars, and court as required; liaise with other sections and stakeholders.
Maintain office standards for timeliness, confidentiality and matter management.

About You (Eligibility)

  • Legal qualifications and current practising certificate.
  • Minimum of five years post‑admission experience as a solicitor or equivalent.
  • Strong ability to conduct legal research and provide high‑quality legal and policy advice promptly.
  • Experience in litigious matters, preparing high‑level submissions, and acting as advocate or instructing solicitor in superior court proceedings.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, plus organisational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a small team and across the Commission’s sections.
  • Familiarity with Australian and international anti‑discrimination and human rights law, including relevant covenants and instruments.
  • Ability to build positive relationships and contribute to continuous improvement of the Legal team.
